DS Group owned Unitex becomes India’s largest selling rubber thread brand

Unitex, a brand owned by Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group) has become the biggest brand of rubber thread in the country, in less than 4 years of operation. Abhisar Buildwell Pvt Ltd, the subsidiary of the conglomerate DS Group, that owns Unitex, has the unique distinction of acquiring 4 international quality certifications simultaneously and taking over its nearest competitor both in terms of turnover and tonnage.

DS Group, a Rs. 1600 crores multi diversified conglomerate with leadership across a wide spectrum of industries, ventured into the rubber industry with its state-of-the-art rubber plant in Agartala in August, 2006. The heat resistant latex rubber thread (HRLRT) plant in technical collaboration  with an European company was set up in the Bodhjungnagar Industrial Growth Center in Agartala. Rs.80 crores has been invested till date in two production lines that have a combined installed capacity of 5000 MT per annum.

Rubber thread has wide applications in various products like Elastic Tapes for inner wear, sportswear, wrist-bands, socks, diapers, surface furnishings, chords to name a few. “The organization is now set to add two more production lines at the cost of Rs. 20 crore in the coming three years which will lead to  a substantial capacity expansion. We are also looking at diversification into latex products like tyres and tubes”, said Mr Vipul Sharma, Vice-President, Corporate Projects, Dharampal Satyapal Ltd.

India’s current rubber thread need is pegged at 12000 tonnes per annum. Unitex not only supplies rubber thread domestically but has also just fulfilled their first order from Bangladesh.. Since the company’s plant is located only about 20 kms from Bangladesh border, continuous efforts have been made to export rubber thread to the neighboring country. The Bangladesh market is currently catered by imports from ASEAN countries like Malaysia and Thailand since there is no manufacturing unit of rubber thread in Bangladesh.
