Haryana CM welcomes the first Miss India from the state
timesofindia.indiatimes.com, 10 Jul, 2017

fbb Colors Femina Miss IndiaWorld 2017 Manushi Chhillar - the first Miss India from Haryana - was welcomed in Chandigarh on Tuesday by the Haryana CM. Though she was raised in Delhi and her parents live here, Manushi participated in the pageant from Haryana, where she was studying for the last two years.

Ever since Manushi Chhillar was crowned the fbb Colors Femina Miss India World 2017, her schedule has been packed with events. On Tuesday, Manushi visited Chandigarh and met Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar (this is the first time that BJP has won in the state). "I am Haryana ki beti," remarked the 20-year-old. A medical student, (she is pursuing MBBS from Bhagat Phool Singh (BPS) Govt Medical College for Women, Sonepat), Manushi is keen on participating in Haryana's initiative on women empowerment, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. Manushi, who has roots in a village in Jhajjar, has been a part of the Beauty With a Purpose (BWAP) project that she has undertaken to educate women on menstrual hygiene. Manushi shared with the CM that she intended to be part of Haryana's social projects too. "I visited the various tourist destinations in Haryana and realized it is such a beautiful state. I will be honoured to be a part of the state's projects, to be of use of any kind to the state that has given me so much," she told the CM.

Manushi attributes her confidence and determination to being the daughter of educated parents (both her parents are doctors in state and central governments). Manushi, who is a trained kuchipudi dancer, painter and debater, added, "Haryana is the land of cultures. Every story here has a woman character in it. And modern girls here too are carrying forward the legacy of the state in their fighter spirit, whether it is Sakshi Malik, or the Phogat sisters. My parents never stopped me from doing anything. Despite her government job, my mom travelled with me for four hours daily for the training."

With a new and improvised format this year, Miss India in its 54th edition toured to all 30 states (including Delhi) of the nation and had crowned one representative from each state who all competed for the coveted Miss India crown. Manushi has been studying in Haryana since the last two years, but her homecoming took place in Delhi since she has been raised here. She participated in the Haryana auditions as the eligibility criteria to apply for fbb Colors Femina Miss India 2017 was that the person needs to be needs to be currently residing in that state or born in that state or a native of that state (contestant's parents reside in that state or she has completed her education until the 12th standard from that state).
